The mountain lion has been one of my favourite subjects. The muscle anatomy and short hair really display its strength and flexibility, and in my experience it is the ultimate predator. I have cast numerous life size sculptures for manikin production in taxidermy; as well, I’ve made body castings for anatomy studies, which have given me a great appreciation and understanding for this big cat.

When the gallery owner of Horizon Fine Arts in Jackson, Wyoming suggested, ‘A mountain lion might be nice,’ I immediately caught the vision for this piece as well as the title. After sculpting this 40% of life size lion, I loved it so much I made the same piece in a monument of 100% life size. The video clip you can view here is the first cast in the edition of thirty. I had this piece poured at Kalispell Art Casting in Montana and the first edition was completed in June of 2008.

The Night Watchman presents a large male cougar lying in a bed of snow waiting for night fall. The rugged mountain terrain on the base is blanketed with snow and the tracks tell the story of a cougar hunting for a rabbit. The tracks eventually lead to a tiny maquette of a female cougar trying to catch the rabbit before it reaches safety.

Thanks for the visit!

The acoustic guitar is from Dan Unger’s CD, Sojourn.
